About Mazingira Yetu

Mazingira Yetu Organisation, established in April 2012, is registered with the Ministry of East African Community, Labour and Social Justice. The organization operates three key programs:
Key Programs
Environmental Education and Communication
Creative approaches are vital in engaging schools and communities, fostering participation, and ensuring environmental education has a lasting impact.
Ecosystem Restoration
The Mazingira Yetu Ecosystem Restoration Program focuses on revitalizing degraded ecosystems like riparian zones and wetlands.
Solid Waste Management Program
Mazingira Yetu Organization trains informal waste pickers and self-help groups on essential topics such as solid waste management, the circular economy, entrepreneurship, gender-based violence, health and safety, and the Sustainable Solid Waste Management Act of 2022.
Sam Dindi
- Co Founder
Sam dindi started Mazingira yetu as a blog while a student in Moi university Chepkoilel which is currently called University of Eldoret. In 2012 he teamed up with Michael Othili started conducting environment education program targeting schools. In July 2020 Sam received the International Union of Conservation Network-Conservation Education
Communication (IUCN-CEC) for his work in educating the public on issues related to environment conservation. In December 2020 he received the Head State Commendation (HSC) from the Government of Kenya for his exemplary service to the nation in the field of environment conservation.
David Kamau
- Ecosytem restoration Director
David Kamau is the Ecosystem restoration Director at Mazingira Yetu Organization. He is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Biology conservation from the University of Nairobi and holds a Bachelors degree in Technology of Applied biology from Technical University of Kenya. David is tasked in developing ecological programs and implementation of the program in each of the project managed by Mazingira yetu organization

Leveraging more than 400 years of combined service, three historic organizations have united to reimagine the fight for a safe environment for all.
Key Achievements
BEST TOILET OF THE YEAR AWARD-Most Infant/Children-Friendly Toilet (2024): Women in Water and Sanitation
Africa Ocean Forum (2024): Mazingira Yetu Organisation developed a skit for the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)-Islandplas-Project to educate citizens of 7 African Island states on mitigating plastic waste and transforming plastic value chain.
Socio-Economic Study: Involved in a study of waste pickers at Dandora dumpsite, commissioned by the Royal Danish Embassy and Danish Environmental Protection Agency (September-October 2024).
Best Public Toilet Award: Received from Women in Water and Sanitation (WIWAS) in 2022 for informal settlement facilities
Kibera Water and Sanitation Works: Project lead in partnership with the Executive Office of the President and Ministry of Water, Sanitation and irrigation (2019-2022) involving the construction of 19 ablution blocks and repair of 15 kilometers of sewer lines, along with a solid waste management program targeting training of 100 waste pickers and management of solid waste along River Ngong and Mutoine.
IUCN MARPLASTICCs Project (2021): Mazingira Yetu worked with IUCN to transition waste pickers to the circular economy, providing training in entrepreneurship and circular economy
IUCN Conservation Education and Communication Excellence Award (2019): Recognized in Eastern and Southern Africa
Mazingira Yetu Magazine: Successfully published 23 editions focused on environmental education since 2013
