OUR PROGRAM
Environmental Education
& Communication
Creative Approaches
Creative approaches can engage and empower learning institutions and local communities, foster participation, and help to ensure relevance and impact. Community focused approaches enable the integration of a wealth of local knowledge and social capital. Creative methods engage the community in both novel and familiar ways and reinforce key messaging through creating memorable experiences and artefacts. Outputs reflect ownership by participants and become more effective, on-the-ground, conduits for information sharing.
School Education Program
Our program focuses on raising environmental awareness in children, starting from an early age. By integrating environmental concepts like biodiversity, pollution, and sustainability into the school curriculum, we aim to help students understand the threats to ecosystems and encourage them to find solutions. Activities include arts, music, dramatizations, and clean-up initiatives, all designed to inspire positive change within schools and communities.
Music in Conservation Program
Music is a powerful tool for spreading environmental messages to a global audience. Our program uses music to raise awareness about conservation, having already composed over 10 songs and won 3 major awards. We’ve mentored 13 young musicians from Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda on creating environmentally-themed music.
Notable successes include the award-winning songs Kifaru Twakupenda (We Love Our Rhino) and Mazingira Yetu (Our Environment). Looking ahead, we plan to expand the program with an annual competition, mentorship, and the production of 10 songs each year. The program aims to empower musicians while making a significant impact on environmental awareness.
Mazingira Yetu Magazine
Mazingira Yetu Magazine is an environmental education publication launched in December 2012 by the Mazingira Yetu Organization. It is registered with the Kenya Copyrights Board, the Registrar of Books and Newspapers, and is affiliated with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN-CEC) and the UN Climate Change Learning Partnership (UN CC: Learn). The magazine, published quarterly in English, is available for free on the Google Play Store and distributed to public schools and community centers around Nairobi.
Mazingira Yetu has a wide readership across Africa and is one of Kenya’s leading environmental publications. Previous editions have covered topics such as adapting to climate change, innovative environmental solutions, and the green economy, featuring articles, interviews, and insights from experts in sustainability.
To maintain its role as a leading educational resource, the magazine will continue releasing quarterly issues focused on emerging environmental topics. Additionally, it plans to launch a biannual comic series aimed at children and youth, covering topics like WASH and climate change. The comics will feature locally relevant messages and storytelling to engage younger audiences. The first issue of the comic series is currently in development.
